Freaky Friday

The Friday Five

1. Who is your favorite singer/musician? Why?

Well, I really like Sade and, in fact, have every once of her cds and even a tape and DVD. Another favorite is Steely Dan (from ?back in the day? for all you youngsters out there)

2. What one singer/musician can you not stand? Why?

I think Eminem is a serious twit par excellence. I also despise Rush (but that is showing my age).

3. If your favorite singer wasn’t in the music business, do you think you would still like him/her as a person?

Umm, I guess. I really don?t know her other than as a singer so I can only make an assumption. Sade seems okay enough to me. It?s not as if I said J-Lo and I want to be her bestest friend (and help her through the ?Bennifer? breakup!) or anything goofy like that.

4. Have you been to any concerts? If yes, who put on the best show?

I used to be a big Prince fan and have seen him in concert three times. The second show (for the tour Lovesexy) was AWESOME. I wasn?t too far from the stage and he just totally kicked ass. (This is circa 1988 when he wasn?t as eccentric as he seems to have gotten now)

I?ve also seen Sade twice and the second time (2001), she was fabulous. She clearly seemed happy to be back on stage performing and just really got in there and sang. It was most, most excellent.

Also, the version Maroon5 did of ?Closer? kicked MAJOR ass from the John Mayer show last November.

5. What are your thoughts on downloading free music online vs. purchasing albums? Do you feel the RIAA is right in its pursuit to stop people from downloading free music?

I am torn about this (in true Libra fashion!). I tend to think that if you like the artist, you will go and purchase the cd no matter what?s available on P2P. I did that for John Mayer. I wanted to support someone new who I really liked so I went and bought the cd. In fact, I bought 2 more to give as gifts. File sharing can give you the opportunity to listen to more songs by a newer artist to see if you want to purchase the cd.

Had the RIAA tried to work WITH the system, rather than against it as it has been. I think it may have benefited in the long run. There will always be newer technology to keep one or two steps ahead of them (the RIAA) so no matter how they (RIAA) try to legislate against it, someone will come up with a way to swap the music. IMO, it?s a losing battle for the RIAA and they are just pissing off people who could or would have been buyers.

Hurricane thoughts:

What a let-down! Jeebus. Wind ooooh the wind! And rain rain – 27 inches of rain!!

HA!

We got some wind (not much – just enough to blow a pinecone off a tree and on to my head whilst walking de dog) and a bit of rain but not more than comes from a regular rainstorm.

FEH, I say.

I did see some downed trees on my way to work this morning. That makes me sad. (Not sure why – “don’t think, Meat”) Of course, it was bidness as usual here at work. We have electricity (thankfully) but there’s some funky ass issue with the water supply.

To wit (stolen from the Washington Post):

The Fairfax County Water Authority announced this morning that electrical failures at three treatment plants left supplies critically low and possibly contaminated.

The authority said its 1.2 million retail and wholesale customers should bring their water to a one-minute boil before drinking, making ice, brushing teeth, washing dishes or preparing food. Boiling kills bacteria that might be growing in the water.

I say EWWW. But at least I have electricity (and cable and ‘net access).
So, Im one of the lucky ones (not showered real well, but lucky!)
