Songs to change the station by

June 7, 2006 Written by Lisa

FYI: Blogger seems to be having some serious ass issues today so I visited some sites but couldn’t leave a comment. I will definitely swing by anyone who stopped in here and gave a shout. GRRR to Blogger today :(

Thirteen hideous songs

(If you get a chance, go visit a very new blogger and one of my pals: K-diggity. It’s her first TT – show her some bloggy luv!)

Today’s topic: Songs that are so bad that I will get up out of a warm bubbly bathtub and make wet footprints on the floor, possibly injuring myself in the process, just to change the radio station.

1. The Devil went down to Georgia – Charlie Daniels Band
I despise this piece of shit song. That fiddle or whatever the hell it is making that twangy ass Deliverance noise. UGH. Never, ever play this song anywhere in my presence. Or at my funeral. Or anywhere near where I might ever have been while I was on this earth. Just don’t.

2. Sunshine of your love – Cream
This has that weird minor chord feeling to it and makes me feel all oogy and drugged out (I have no idea what that feels like but if I did, it would be this).

3. We didn’t start the fire – Billy Joel
If I were on the very edge of a nervous breakdown and heard this song, it just might push me over the brink. If “Sunshine” above causes me to feel all “hey, groovy, man”, this would be the opposite drug reaction – like taking speed and cocaine and drinking 300 cups of coffee. HATE.

4. What’s up – 4 Non-Blondes
“… and I try … oh my god, do I try …” to listen to this song but it makes me want to throw things when I hear it. I thought it was called “What’s going on” but checked it out and “What’s up” is the title. It is also, FYI, number 40 in VH1’s countdown of the most hideous songs evah.

5. Convoy – CW McCall
Sadly, this is what passed for music (and popular music at that!) in 1974. Hell, you can’t even dance to it. At least you can move your butt a tad to “Achy Breaky Heart” if you had enough beers in ya.

6. We built this city – Jefferson Starship
This was the number one most hated song on that VH 1 list and yeah, it’s pretty shitty. But I don’t cringe as much at this one as I do to some of the others.

7. Kokomo – Beach Boys
I just have to hear the first notes and I am changing that station at light speed. This is dreck, pure as it gets kiddies.

8. Do you believe – Cher
Yeah, you can dance to it but that voice synthesizer thingy is just plain annoying. Warbly and goofy. Bleah.

9. “All I wanna do (is make love to you)” – Heart
“Is there anything more insipid and nauseating than the vain musings of Heart’s incredibly stupid “All I Want to Do (Is Make Love to You)”? Ugh, I am feeling sick already just thinking about it.”- comment by someone named Alex (here) who said it much better than I ever could.

10. “Can you feel the love tonight” – Elton John
What happened to his talent?? Damn. I loves me some early EJ (“Funeral for a friend/Love lies bleeding” anyone?) but he’s so hacktastic now. It makes me sad to even hear it plus it’s just wretched no matter WHO is singing this song.

11. kashmir – Led Zepplin
Admittedly, I am not a big LZ fan but do like a few things here and there. This one, however, reminds me of Sisyphus just pushing that big ass rock up a hill only to have it roll right on back down again. I would define this song as “dirge-like” and if listened to alongside “Sunshine of your love” will put you right into a stoner coma.

12. My heart will go on – “Saline” Dion
With all due respect to the Cousin ‘o Love, I hate every single thing by CD (except one and I’m not revealing it or why either so nyah!). This one takes the cake though. Maudlin, overdone, blargh. Just blargh.

13. “I hope you dance” by some country twit whose name I cannot be bothered to look up
How come the local country station is de rigeur at the Dollar General? Because every time I’m there (not that often), this dumbass song is on. It’s cornball, goofy and just sappyass. Blargh. I would actually rather hear John Cougar Melonhead than this.

LOL! This is a great list. Most of these songs suck. But I do like Led Zepp.

How funny–some of these songs I really like. In fact, most of them I really like. Its always interesting to me how somebody can hate something and another person really go for it.

Thanks for stopping by my TT.

Oh how I agree. The vocal effect on Cher is unbelievable. How did it become so popular that we still are tortured with this one.

I’m with you on Kokomo. Hate that song. I, too, will dive to the radio to turn the station or turn the whole thing on. I can’t stand that “Don’t Worry, Be Hapy.” Hate it. And the Alicia Keyes song, “Fallen.” If I ever hear that again it will be too soon.

If you don’t like Believe by Cher, then you should hear Somnambulist (Simply Being Loved) by Brian Transeau. It holds the Guiness Book of World Records for most vocal edits. (over 6000)

Admit it, you know you’ve got half that shit on your iPod! Huge props for the obscurer-than-hell “Convoy” on your list. Well done, friend.

Hey Lisa … I don’t know all the songs you mention… at least I probably know them when I hear them but not the titles! I do recognise some though immediately though. I particularly hate MY HEART WILL GO ON …. mainly because it reminds me of the film Titanic … SURELY one of the greatest turkeys of all time. YAWN! Glad lots of others hate it too!

Omigosh, this is so hilarious! I don’t know all these songs, but it doesn’t matter because your explanations alone had me rolling (in laughter *and* tears).
