TT #6 - Running Short on Cleverness
Thursday 13

.:: Books, Looks and Crooks ::.

1. Book: My favorite book is “Eat, Pray, Love” by Elizabeth Gilbert. It’s basically about one woman’s year spent in Italy (eat), India (Pray) and Bali (love). It is immensely profound, moving and funny and she’s such a damn good writer that I could hate her (but don’t).

2. Look: Sad but true: “Wife Swap” is my guilty pleasure. It could be worse, y’all. It could have been “Breaking Bonaduce” (ummm, not an addiction but I did watch, yes) or “Chaotic” (I doubt I could endure 10 seconds of Spederline so count yer blessings) but nope, it’s “Wife Swap”.

3. Crook: There was this chick robbing banks in the Northern VA area whose modus operandi was that she talked on her cell phone while giving the teller a stick up note. Now how durn stupid is that? I believe she robbed three banks that way in a short period of time and she was promptly caught. Moral of the story: When committing a crime, best to blend in as much as possible, K?

4. Book: Prior to the aforementioned “Eat, Pray, Love”, my favorite book was “A Prayer for Owen Meany” by John Irving. It’s a dense book, no kidding. But the thread that runs through it is the guiding force in my life: Everything happens for a reason. Plus, you will never run into another character like Owen Meany. I loved him.

5. Look: Favorite movie: ” Bridget Jones’s Diary. I know the entire dialogue and can recite it on cue. Best line ever:

Bridget: Wait a minute… nice boys don’t kiss like that.
Mark Darcy: Oh, yes, they fucking do.

6. Crook: Remember that shoe bomber dude? I know he’s not a crook, just a dumbass. He all but asked the flight attendant for a match, for pity sake. Rule number two of crookery: try to think ahead and bring your own implements.

7. Book: Here’s one I can’t seem to get through: The DaVinci Code by Dan Brown. I’ve tried about three times to get into it and just can’t. I even bought the paperback because I was tired of returning it to the library unread. Where is it now? Still on my nightstand. Unread.

8. Crook: Rule number three of crookery: Don’t drink and do illegal things (although sometimes one leads to the other, eh?) Here’s an example of why it’s not a good idea:

A 21-year-old dummy in Georgia was busted after he attempted to buy drinks with a checkbook he found at a bar. Unfortunately for the man, identified as Jody Brian Minor of McRae, the very bartender who owned the checkbook was serving him.

Dude! You are SO busted!!

9. Book: Who remembers this book: “Are you there, God? It’s me, Margaret” by Judy Blume. A classic of my adolescent years and all about wanting to be a grown up girl (aka: getting your period). I just perused the reader’s comments at B&N and laughed at this one: Parts of the book seem dated, (nobody uses sanitary belts, my mother said they hurt!). Come on, now! Who remembers sanitary belts?? I was just coming of age when maxi pads made their debut. Much better, indeed. Good times!

10. Look: The Office (British version) - Lauren and I watched the entire first season of this show one of the last full days I spent with her the hospital. We laughed and snorted our way through it (but we loved us some british humor!). I haven’t yet watched NBC’s version of it (but plan to). Not sure if I will like it since Ricky Gervais is the only one who could play that role pitch perfect. La was the one that encouraged me to change the title line of my blog to “Just an immature tosser” and I leave that there in her honor.

11. Crook: Rule number four of crookery: Pepper spray goes on the other person!

To wit:

Police said a man threatened family members with a knife then sprayed himself with pepper spray, exposing everyone to the fumes. The suspect was hospitalized and faces charges of assault with a deadly weapon.

Comment from the blog writer reporting the story: The unidentified man is expected to recover from his injuries, but he will have to wait for a donor so he can have a dignity transplant.

12. Book: This is the second book I’ve read by President Jimmy Carter and it’s called “Living Faith“. The more I learn about him, the more I respect him. He is a person who truly and completely “walks his talk”. For more on this, see my post over at A Healing Path, my blog about spirituality in my life.

13. Here we have a look about a crook: If you’re a Sopranos fan, go back and watch Season One again from start to finish. It’s amazing to see where it all started and get the complete feel of the wrath of Livia Soprano. My family was amazed at how much she and my grandmother were similar (although grandma didn’t try to have anyone whacked, as far as we know!).

Very clever and well written. I remember those belts, but never read the book. I voted for Carter twice, but ex’s need to keep quiet about a sitting president. Really diminishes his image.

    Thanks for visiting my TT.

Everybody just loves Bridget Jones. I saw the first one in the theater forever and a day ago. I need to get both of them on Netflix and catch up with my pop culture.

Wonderful list, Snarky - and the “book, look, crook” theme is awesome! I haven’t read Elizabeth Gilbert’s book yet, but I read an excerpt of it in a magazine article (it was from the part where she was in Italy, learning Italian, and hanging out with the two twins) and was intrigued. I will keep it on my list of books to read.
