“Make me fall for you
As if i had nothing else to do
How could you make me?
Let me hold you true to everything i thought i knew
How could you make me?”
Lyrics from a song called “Make Me” by a band called Midwest Kings (or MWK for short). I love these lyrics and the song is really good. Check them out here. (I’ll leave it to my oh-so-loyal three readers to figure out the connection here. It’s not hard, baybeee.)
Random thought while listening to the State of the Union address (for the first time in eight years): Finally! A President who speaks well and has a clue. Bonus points for not having to watch Darth Cheney fall asleep on camera!
Random movie watching this past weekend: my all-time favorite: Bridget Jones’s Diary. Lauren and I loved that movie and ran around calling each other “Jones” in a british accent for months afterward. Plus our most often quoted line: “what a gripping life you do lead” – I’m so much like BJ, it’s almost scary. Except I don’t smoke or drink but I do call people emotional fuckwits so maybe it balances out.
File under “Whatnot”: you can take all your damn charts and graphs and market predictions and throw them out the window. After being in that field for over 25 years, I’m here to tell you, it’s ALL perception. Bernacke says the market will be on the upswing at the end of the year (SURRRE it will, buster) and BINGO! Market goes up 200 points. What a load of crap. I’m sorry to tell you that after spending my entire adult life in that field, from what I can see and understand (admittedly, not much), it’s all a crap shoot. It really is. Sad but true (IMO).
More random “SOTU” thoughts: I realize we had to have a Bush to bring us to our knees in order to appreciate an Obama. And appreciate him I do. Along with a bizillion others out there. Thank you, Universe. It’s gonna be a long trudge forward but I am so glad someone with a fucking clue and an open heart is now in charge. Extraordinary times, indeed.

Check out this site, chika. Looks like Cookie is coming to the Delaware State Fair…. 7/27 with tix on sale 3/31. Care to join me for some fun?
Thanks for reminding me of Bridget Jones! Recently I creeped myself out by thinking that April Wheeler in Revolutionary Road was the movie character I most related to, and she was, well … not a happy person. But remember Bridget singing “Without You” in her pajamas at the top of her lungs, in between spoonsful of ice cream straight from the tub? Made me wonder who was watching ME at home.
I worked very hard on Senator Kerry’s 04 campaign — every day for 11 months. We came within 3 points of Bush and it quite literally broke my heart. I felt I disappointed Senator Kerry by not doing more/better and that my country disappointed me. I cried every morning in the shower for more than 3 months after that. While I still believe with every fiber of my being that Senator Kerry was the better man, I have come to realize what you say above: “I realize we had to have a Bush to bring us to our knees in order to appreciate an Obama.” For while Senator Kerry is wise and patient and altogether decent, he could never inspire us the way Obama does. So while I hate what my country went through these last four years, I realize it may ultimately have been painfully necessary.
BTW, no need to apologize for not checking in from work. There are blogs I’ve found I can’t get to from home because they take to long to load! So I completely understand.
Snarkela, I thought I left my comment last night! If I did, and somehow it reappears, excuse my redundancy.
Thank you for reminding me of Bridget Jones! I had been thinking that the fictional character that most resembles me these days is April Wheeler from Revolutionary Road, and while I admired Kate Winslet’s performance, the resemblances between me and April are most emphatically NOT a feel good. However, when I think back to Bridget, in her pjs, singing “Without You” at the top of her lungs while spooning ice cream directly from the carton, I smile. And wonder they knew I do that!
