Day of Passing Playlist

On October 26, 2009, in General Blatherings, by Lisa

I found this over at Soul Pancake and thought it might be interesting to ponder:

“Amazing tradition. They throw a great party for you on the one day they know you can’t come.” —Jeff Goldblum (as Michael Gold in The Big Chill)

Eight college friends search for lost ideals following the death of their mate Alex in Lawrence Kasdan’s The Big Chill, and brilliantly setting the stage is Kasdan’s iconic opening scene, where JoBeth Williams (as Karen Bowens) starts playing “You Can’t Always Get What You Want” by the Stones on a booming church organ. Each of the characters knowingly smiles at the first chords of the song. And a minute later, Mick Jagger’s rendition joins the soundtrack. In an instant, you’re thinking about love and life, memories and friendships, as well as your own death. So, thinking about the group of people that will likely come together over you one day, what songs sum up your life and would bring smiles to those left behind?

List 5 songs you would add to the playlist for your funeral.

1. Angel by Sarah McLachlan
“You are pulled from the wreckage of your silent reverie / In the arms of an Angel; may you find some comfort here”

2. Dig by Incubus
“Remind me that we’ll always have each other / When everything else is gone. / Oh each other…. / When everything / Else is gone.”

3. In my life / The Beatles

There are places i’ll remember / All my life though some have changed
Some forever not for better / Some have gone and some remain
All these places have their moments / With lovers and friends i still can recall
Some are dead and some are living / In my life i’ve loved them all

4. Just Fine / Mary J Blige (A totally great, upbeat song)

No time for moping around, are you kidding?
Ain’t no time for negative vibes, cause I’m winning
It’s been a long week, I put in my hardest
Gonna live my life, feels so good to get it right

So I like what I see when I’m looking at me
When I’m walking past the mirror
No stress through the night, at a time in my life
Ain’t worried about if you feel it
Got my head on straight, I got my mind right
I aint gonna let you kill it
You see I wouldn’t change my life, my life’s just…..

Fine, fine, fine, fine, fine, fine, ooooh
Fine, fine, fine, fine, fine, fine, ooooh
Just fine, fine, fine, fine, fine, fine, ooooh
You see I wouldn’t change my life, my life’s just fine

5. The World I Know – Originally done by Collective Soul but for my celebration, I want the version done by (not-so-secret boyfriend) David Cook as shown here below the lyrics:

So I walk up on high /And I step to the edge
To see my world below / And I laugh at myself
As the tears roll down / cause it’s the world I know
It’s the world I know.

  1. Aw, “In My Life.” That song conjures up such strong memories of John. I realize that most of the public feels “Imagine” is the song that expresses him best, but I disagree. There was a desperate touch of new political convert in that. But every note, every syllable of “In My Life” is so sincere. You’ve left me verklempt!

I will steal this, but it requires a lot of thought, doesn’t it? Stay tuned.
