How’s THAT for a title? It doesn’t mean anything, alas. I started this post a week ago and am just now getting around to writing it.
Not that I have a lot to say, mind you.
Or even anything of import.
Still that stops me not.
Welcome to Blatherings of a house-bound chick
Short(ish) commentary on matters of pop culture significance.
Item #1: George Clooney getting engaged: First off, I do not care for this man. Never have, never will. So his marital status (or his sexual predilections) are not of my concern. Even if I did enjoy his films (which I don’t. At all.), it would still be noneya. Second off, if you want to know what I really think of him, here’s two words for you: smarmy asshole.
Item #2: Texting and driving is so so bad. I’ve done it while my higher self screams “What are you doing?????” at me. I decided to continue to live my life instead of dying in a crash somewhere because of my need for immediate feedback. I really can’t even talk on the phone while driving. Because I’ve got the overly-sensitive hearing thing going on, any conversations going on via my ears distracts me.
Oddly, I can listen to audible books and music and that’s fine but chatting takes me way out of my body which is not where you wanna be when you’re piloting a hunk of metal around the roads at high speed. I was sad to hear of that young woman writing on FB about loving the song “Happy” and smashing her car into pieces right after. Bless her heart. (And I mean that in a loving way, not the southern way.)
Item #3: What is it about having a black president that gave all the racists (and crazies!) permission to just come on out and show their ass in public? Jesus, people. Think what you want but for fuck’s sake, stop it already. That idiot Cliven Bundy and his “just wondering” if African-Americans would be better off as slaves (???!!!), toting around an American flag while saying he chooses not to believe the government exists ($1000 says he’s all happy to take Social Security and Medicaid from a government that doesn’t exist). And don’t even get me started on the Queen of all Fuckwits, one Sarah Palin and her “waterboarding for Jesus” comments. Have mercy.
Item #4: I am strangely obsessed with 30Rock. I am now on my third run through the entire series (all 7 seasons) via Netflix. I watch 2-3 eps a night before bed and it amuses me greatly. Never an Alec Baldwin fan, I have to give him big ass props for this role (which was written with him in mind before Tina Fey even asked if he’d be interested in it) – for me, the interplay between his character (Jack Donaghy) and Fey’s (Liz Lemon) is the heart of the show. I even bought the first 4 seasons on Ebay (because Amazon wanted a bizillion dollars for it) – and am excited to see the extras on each season. (I have lost most of my mind, yes?)
Okay, that’s all for now. BTW, Rocco (the wee pitty who gnawed nicely on my leg) has gone to a Pit Bull rescue organization to learn to stop said gnawings. This last volunteer day, I got my lip slashed (just a bit) by a tiny puppy with sharp claws who apparently wasn’t overly fond of my kissing on him. I only bled a little. (heh)
JFK was murdered less than three years in. Bill Clinton is only the second President in history to be impeached. Barack Obama is doing very well by those standards.
It is curious that the liberals in this country have been easier on poor Presidential performers than the RWNJs. I like to think that it’s because we’re morally superior. I suspect, though, that it’s that we’re less organized.
Gal,
I can and do appreciate Clooney’s efforts at drawing attention to things that desperately need it. I just cannot help the off-putting vibe I get when I see him. It almost makes me recoil. (I’m like that with Brad Pitt too and I know he does good things in the world as well. They just ick me out.)
And yes, I know Clinton was a huge target but it feels to me like ALLLLL the crazies and ugliness has been unleashed since 2008. It’s possible I’m more aware of it and it’s also possible that it’s a by-product of humanity sorting itself out. Dunno.
It doesn’t weigh me down (pretzels do that!) but it does bother me when I see it. I also recognize that we are all on our own evolutionary paths and are at different places on that path. The world keeps on spinning for sure.
Thanks for your thoughtful comments!
How can you say you didn’t care for Good Night and Good Luck? Or The Ides of March? A responsible media can be this electorate’s greatest asset, and those movies — along with All the President’s Men and The Candidate — remind a mass audience about speaking truth to power and who works for whom in a democracy. I insist on admiring Clooney, like Redford before him, for using his power to make serious movies on important topics that no studio would touch without movie star bankability and clout. I also love it that the woman he’s settling down with is such an expert on human rights that she advises Kofi Anan. I mean, REALLY!
Sunshine is a great sanitizer. The more we see Bundy and Palin, the less influence they have. I say that to myself as a mantra all the time, because the toxicity weighs me down, too, but it’s true. And this didn’t start with Obama. Remember “The Clinton Chronicles?” That was the video openly sold by the Religious Right back in the 1990s that accused Bill & Hill of murdering Vince Foster and all manner of other Arkansans. There was a black-bordered, full page ad in the Dallas newspapers on the morning of 11/22/63 accusing the President of treason and there were many (including his widow) that believed the hate talk in that city incited an unhinged Oswald. Sometime you should visit the Lincoln Presidential Library in Springfield. The editorial cartoons of Abe would take your breath away.
We’ll get through this, Snarkela. I know how much you care and I know how much it hurts your heart, but I think that there’s just a certain amount of ugly baked into a society that values free speech. I’m not saying you should accept it. I’m not saying you shouldn’t try to make the world better. But you can’t let it weigh you down so much. You’re needed to do the more important work!
